Samsung CLX-3175FN Review
The Samsung CLX-3175FN's main feature is certainly its small footprint. Although it has a 10/100 Ethernet slot, its small 150 sheet paper tray signifies that the CLX-3175FN is perfect for a personal printer.
A two-line LCD screen enables you to get around menus and also change settings. It contains a limited number of options, and so is easy to use. If you'd like full control, you wii have to make use of the web interface, which is similarly convenient to use. We were pleased to find features such as IP filtering, which will allow you to restrict use of the printer to specified addresses on your local network, along with a fax phone book.
This is the only colour laser printer in this price bracket with a 1200x1200 dpi scanner. Unfortunately, scan speeds isn't that fast. We have to wait for 21 seconds for a preview scan, while a 300dpi A4 page took about a minute and 22 secs. The scans looked detailed but rather dark. The scanner interface can communicate with the MFP via a network connection. The main window provides a few important presets and then a button expands to provide a selection of scan options.
Print quality looks superb, having full, extreme colours, clean shading and well-defined detail. Business graphs and illustrations were vibrant and solidly coloured, and photo-quality images had accurate shading and little grain. Print speeds appeared to be quite slow, at 14.6ppm for a mono text document then 3.8ppm for colour, however our initial mono page came about in a quick 12 secs, which can be effective should you print only a few pages at a time.
The CLX-3175N's major draw back is difinitely its high print costs. The Samsung CLX-3175 printer cartridges have a small capacity with the black cartridge (CLT-K4092S) only rated 1500 pages and the three colour cartridges (yellow, cyan and magenta) at 1000 pages, thus the expense of replacing them eventually mounts up with too much use. Since these cartridges are a new addition to the array of Samsung toner cartridges there are no compatible cartridges available at the moment. However in due course we could expect this problem to change and to achieve lower printing costs. However, if you'll only use it once in awhile, it's a great value, with a TCO of just £366, but heavy users could possibly spend thousands. Nonetheless, if you wish to print superb colour and need a personal printer that will not use up a lot of space, this is definitely a perfect Budget Buy which in due course will become less expensive to run.
