Feed Review – Commenting On Feeds
Before the internet, newspapers, television, and radio used to deliver news and current affairs to the public. The advent of the internet however, led to content delivery at breakneck speed. Content that is continuously updated and covers a wide variety of topics. A feed is a data format which provides you with an inexhaustible pool of updated content, generated by users. Feed review is a comment posted by users for a particular feed.
The concept of feeds was originally derived from the newspaper. The snippets section (or news digest) of a newspaper gave a brief overview of the news covered. Similarly a web-feed or news feed gives you concise information. They may also provide a link where you could read the full article. A web-feed is generated by the same website it updates. A Feed review is used by users to review content, which lets other users know how popular, or non-popular, the content is.
An online video-feed about a boy comically falling from a rope had users in splits. Their feed review reflected this. As a result, other users who read the reviews checked the video, and laughed their hearts out too.
There are two standard types of feeds - RSS and Atom.
* RSS
RSS is translated as Really Simple Syndication. It is used to publish frequently updated blogs, news, video, audio, and other content. An RSS feed includes a summary of the text plus publishing date and name of the author. RSS gained widespread usage between 2005 and 2006.
* Atom
Atom feeds have a mechanism to label the type of content being published. They also provide a reference to documents, video, audio streams, and other types of content.
Atom was created to rival and replace RSS as standard for web-feeds.
Users can subscribe to RSS or Atom feeds for regular updates of their favorite websites and post their feed reviews.
Benefits of Web Feeds
* The most important benefit of subscribing to a web-feed is security. You do not need to disclose your email id while subscribing to a web-feed. This reduces the exposure to email threats such as spam, viruses, identity theft, and phishing.
* You do not have to send any request to unsubscribe the service. Simply remove the web-feed from the feed-reader.
* The web-feeds are automatically sorted.
A web-feed can be technically defined as a document (XML based) whose content items include web links to the source of content. Websites which contain news and blogs are a common source for web-feeds. Web-feeds also deliver structured information for search results, news headlines, and top ten hits etc. Web-feed content can be shared and/or republished by other websites as well.
You can subscribe directly to a web-feed using a feed reader. Subscribing to feeds helps a user to stay updated about the latest news or trends. A user may subscribe to web-feeds of his favorite soccer team. This will help the user get the latest news and scores. Web feeds can even help spread important information in the event of a natural calamity, way before broadcast news gets hold of it.
With invent of newer versions like Web 2.0, one could argue that the next evolution of feeds would be sites such as Twitter.
