How to Find a Good Air Conditioning Contractor
Your air conditioning system is an essential part of the comfort of your home, especially during those long summer months when the heat and humidity combine to make things sticky and miserable. If you’ve ever suffered through a stretch of hot weather with your air conditioner on the blink, you know how important it is to have an air conditioning repair company you can rely on for quick, efficient and affordable repairs or replacement.
Finding a reliable air conditioning repair contractor is essential for a number of reasons. First, you want to know that the repairs made will be up to code and safe for you and your family – faulty installation can be dangerous as well as costly. You also want to find an air conditioning contractor who will give you an honest, fair quote for an air conditioning system that will be powerful enough to cool your home properly when you’re ready for a new unit. There are a few things you should keep in mind when looking for an air conditioning contractor that will ensure that you find the right company or individual for the job.
Look for air conditioning contractors who belong to professional organizations. There are several organizations that focus on the HVAC industry; each of these has strict guidelines and expects their membership to keep up to date on industry changes through continuing education. Look for ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers), AMSE (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) or ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors Association) membership.
Interview potential contractors. You can do this by phone or in person; the important thing is to ask the right questions. You should ask them:
• Are you and your employees bonded and insured? Even if the contractor is an individual air conditioning repair specialist, he should be properly bonded and insured to protect both of you.
• Do you have referrals from recent clients? Ask for names and phone numbers of recent customers – then call them and ask what they thought of the service they received.
• Can you provide a quote free of charge? A good air conditioning contractor will be happy to provide you with a quote for the job. The quote should be itemized, with each part clearly described and priced separately.
• Take note of the questions they ask you when discussing the work you need done. The more detailed their questions, the more accurate their quote is likely to be. At the least, they should ask about your home’s size and dimensions, the amount of insulation you have, number and placement of windows, etc.
• Ask if the contractor is a licensed distributor for the air conditioning unit or units they recommend. Those who are licensed distributors can often offer a better warranty directly from the manufacturer.
• Be sure to discuss the timeline needed to complete the work.
• Check websites and do some research. Legitimate air conditioning contractors will usually either have a website of their own or have a detailed listing with a professional contractors’ service website. These will provide information on the services provided, links to additional information and contact information for the company. Be sure you check to see that all information is current and accurate.
Finally, when you’ve narrowed your choice down to a few air conditioning contractors who you feel will do a good job for you, check with the Better Business Bureau to see if they have a history of complaints. And remember, a good air conditioning repair or replacement contractor will always be willing to put their agreement with you in writing!

Working $18.95 WITH A NEW FOREWORD BY ADAM COHEN OF THE NEW YORK TIMES. Perhaps Studs Terkel's best-known book, Working is a compelling look at jobs and the people who do them. Consisting of over one hundred interviews with everyone from a gravedigger to a studio head, from a policeman to a piano tuner, this book provides an enduring portrait of people's feelings about their working lives. "A powerful, original, indescribable and incredible book... Only an interviewer of genius, exploiting the tape recorder as hardly anyone else has done, could possibly have brought it forth." —Lewis Mumford. "A magnificent book... a work of art. To read it is to hear America talking." — Boston Globe. "Splendid... Important... Rich and fascinating... The people we meet are not digits in a poll but real people with real names who share their ancedotes, adventures, and aspirations with us." — Business Week. "The talk in Working is good talk--earthy, passionate, honest, sometimes tender, sometimes crisp, juicy as reality, seasoned with experience." — Washington Post. "Nothing could tell our children's children who and how and what we were the way Studs Terkel will. Is it possible the great American novelist is Terkel?" —Murray Kempton |

The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844 $3.99 This is an electronic edition of the complete book complemented by author biography. This booktable of contents linked to every chapter and footnote. ******************. The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844 is one of the best-known works of Friedrich Engels. Originally written in German as Die Lage der arbeitenden Klasse in England, it is a study of the working class in Victorian England. It was also Engels'' first book, written during his stay in Manchester from 1842 to 1844. Manchester was then at the very heart of the Industrial Revolution, and Engels compiled his study from his own observations and detailed contemporary reports. Engels argues that the Industrial Revolution made workers worse off. He shows, for example, that in large industrial cities mortality from disease, as well as death-rates for workers were higher than in the countryside. In cities like Manchester and Liverpool mortality from smallpox, measles, scarlet fever and whooping cough was four times as high as in the surrounding countryside, and mortality from convulsions was ten times as high as in the countryside. The overall death-rate in Manchester and Liverpool was significantly higher than the national average (one in 32.72 and one in 31.90 and even one in 29.90, compared with one in 45 or one in 46). An interesting example shows the increase in the overall death-rates in the industrial town of Carlisle. Prior to the introduction of mills (1779-1787), 4,408 out of 10,000 children died before reaching the age of five. After the introduction of mills the figure rose to 4,738. Prior to the introduction of mills, 1,006 out of 10,000 adults died before reaching 39 years old. After the introduction of mills the death rate rose to 1,261 out of 10,000. It is considered by many to be a classic account of the condition of the industrial working class. It was originally addressed to a German audience. The eldest son of a successful German textile industrialist, Engels became involved in radical journalism as a teenager. Sent to England, what he saw made him even more radical. About this time he formed his life-long intellectual partnership with Karl Marx. Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. |

Inhuman Condition by Thornton, Kate [Paperback] $23.66 Human beings tend to fear the things they dont know, and that is often sensible, given the lurking.dangers that confronted our distant ancestors. But sometimes we need to examine carefully the things we think we know: the pet shop owner in town, the teenage girl who lives next door, the people with whom we work, or the nice man who walks his dog each evening in our neighborhood. The stories in this collection will drive that point home, and perhaps give you reason to redefine the word inhuman. Kate Thorntons imagination is only exceeded by her talent as a storyteller. From the scifi fascinations of Mare Tranquillitatus to the darkly provocative Working in the Suburbs, Thornton takes us on an impish joy ride through a mind field of criminal intents. Inhuman Condition is a rare and evocative find among story collections. Darrell James, Award Winning Author of Body CountIn Inhuman Condition, noted short story author Kate Thornton has compiled some of her finest tales into one fun and exciting read.
