A Universal Printer Driver - What It Is And How It Works?
When it comes to choosing printing drivers for computers in the office, the IT department may choose to install universal print drivers. This, however, may prove to be the bane or the savior of the department.
Instead of using the specific language coded for specific printing devices the universal print drivers, also known as generic print drivers, depend on a standard printing language. This technique of coding makes the printers adaptable to any printing device and that is what makes them 'universal'. They do, however, have their disadvantages and advantages.
When the printing machines are old and outdated and when the operating systems are not really the latest in technology, problems may crop up with the use of the standard print drivers. There will be constant breakdown and communication failure when the latest drivers are used on outdated equipment. This is where the universal print drivers come in real handy and save the day for the IT department.
Universal print drivers were really developed to be used with networks where one network printer served a number of computers, or clients. Being mainly used for network printing the universal printer drivers are able to be setup quickly and conveniently with little worry about setting individual computer settings.
Universal print drivers are the choice of any engineer when it comes to setting up a printing device with computers that are very old or are a mixture of ancient and ultra modern computers operating in the network environment. These will obviously have different operating systems. Since drivers used for printing are designed to fit into the operating system some print drivers will not be able to fit into an OS that is just three years old.
There is another downside to using a universal printer driver. This disadvantage is that the universal print drivers, being designed to operate a printing device, will naturally not be able to support the other features the printing machine may have to offer, such as faxing or scanning. These features may in all probability not be available with universal drivers. In order to use these facilities of the printing device, the user will have to install the specific device driver that came along with the machine.
In many cases when users experience compatibility issues the manufacturer of the printing device may supply a universal printer driver with additional software that will enable the additional facilities to be used - but there will often be drawbacks and failures with this add-on software especially when the printer is on a slow network. When using universal print drivers one must keep in mind that the universal print driver is made to print and that is what it will do best - print.
Many manufacturers of printing machines did not make their machines to be used with a one-size-fits all driver, which is what a universal printer driver is, This is why sometimes the device being driven by a universal printer driver will display odd characters and formats that do not look anything like what was displayed on the screen. These odd displays are called 'artifacts' and are not so easy to track so the manufacturers leave them alone considering them a caveat to convenience that using universal drivers brings.
