The first thing you have to do is to check whether there is a dial tone or not. A fax machine cannot run without dial tone. Make sure you have plugged the cord into the fax machine's phone line jack. Another possibility is that maybe the phone number is not a working number. Try a mobile phone or an additional land line to verify it.
If you want to have your fax to be able to automatically receive faxes, you can set it by removing the TEL seal. Plug the extension telephone or answering machine to the TEL jack. Now you can instruct your fax to receive faxes, even when no one is at home or office to accept transmission.
Another important thing that needs your consideration is to set the fax to automatic reception mode. This will stop a fax line to ring without cessation and to allow receive faxes after a certain number of rings. Getting a "Error - Check Paper" message is quite disturbing somehow and how to get rid of that? That message indicates the paper is misaligned or the paper is jammed. To get rid of that message, you should have your paper removed from the fax machine. Unplug the fax's cord from the wall socket for about 20 seconds, then re-plug it and you can put the paper back to the feeder. To prevent the same error message from happening again, put some pressure on each piece of paper along the edge of the feeder and you can put a gently tap at the top of the paper to get your document properly fitted.
A Sharp fax machine has the memory built in. It is important to keep you fax's memory from exceeding the limit. To clear the memory of your fax machine is a bit tricky and many users don't know how to do it. Actually the solution is very easy. Press the "Function" key followed by the number "9" key, then you will be asked to enter the file number, the command is sort of like this "Enter File Number or ^". The file number to enter is "###" and then hit "Set" to remove all files from the memory. There will be a question shown up like this "Delete All Files? You have to option: 1 for "Yes" and 2 for "No". Press number "1" key to delete all files.
