Selling Tickets Online for Small Organizations
Selling tickets, maintaining a customer database, printing out and mailing out tickets can be a labor intensive chore for many venue operators and particularly onerous if the venue relies on just a few volunteers. Consequently it's not surprising that many venue operators choose to outsource this task to specialist ticketing service companies. Nevertheless for a lot of small organizations in particular, outsourcing is not a perfect solution because it can have its downside points :
* the cost of the service, which can often be quite significant in relation to the ticket price
* it may not be possible to change the service charge applied to web based ticket purchases
* restricted or no access to the customer database for marketing purposes such as sending out e-mails
* ticket revenue may be retained until after the event has taken place
* events will be promoted on the ticketing service company's web site along with many additional events
Fortunately there are an increasing number of box office ticketing systems on the market that even the smallest users including colleges , community organisations and non-profit organizations can use to administer both their box office ticketing and web based ticketing. And many organisations most likely are not aware that not just is the cost of such systems very reasonable , but generally speaking, the systems are straightforward to set up, logical to use and don't necessarily require additional hardware or software to be invested in .
With the payment per ticket pricing model adopted by many ticketing software providers, there is no software to acquire and customarily no setup charges or other regular fees . With this particular pricing model, generally speaking, the only cost is usage or licence fee based on the value of all tickets sold through the system which may either be calculated as a percentage of the ticket price or flat dollar rate per ticket. And fees may be low as 2% of the ticket price or $.50 per ticket, subject to the number of tickets which might be sold.
In fact it could be said that the only key issues for small organisations is that they have an existing website online, (assuming they wish to sell tickets online), have some method of handling payment into their bank account, and have a suitable ticket printer .
Setting up to sell tickets online on an existing web page however is generally quite straightforward . The ticketing software company can generally build a webpage that appears exactly like a nominated page on your current website, and the ticket selection and credit card processing will be executed on this page. The actual ticketing software and the payment processing is hosted by the ticketing software company.
To process credit cards, there are by and large two alternatives offered . Firstly, the ticketing company will process all the payments and receive the payments into their bank account. After the event has been held, or on a specified schedule, the company will then forward the total ticket income less credit card processing fees, and any system usage fees to the venue operator. In the second case, the venue operator establishes their own payment gateway and merchant account, in which case all ticket sales revenue is received by the venue operator when a ticket has been sold. The ticketing software company then invoices the usage fees according to the total sales revenue received.
For printing tickets , whilst the most ideal method is to use a specialised thermal ticket printer, regrettably such printers can be quite pricey. However many ticketing software companies offer the option of printing tickets with a regular laser or inkjet printer, where tickets are printed on a normal letter or A4 sized sheet of paper. Pre-perforated paper can be purchased from specialized paper suppliers or perforated to order from a local printer that will enable 4 or 5 tear off tickets per sheet.
Of course any new system might take a while to master, but in the longer term, most smaller venue operators will likely be thankful for the savings in time and trouble that a fully featured box office ticketing system can offer to sell tickets online
