Guide To Buying Point Of Sale Printers
If you recently visited a supermarket, clothing store, department store or boutique then you have been serviced a receipt printed by a point-of-sale printer, or receipt printer as it's also called. These printers are typically attached to a point of sale machine but can be attached to a computer as a separate unit. Not only do they offer receipts to consumer, they provide an invaluable record keeping capability to merchants. Receipts are necessary for tax filing purposes and returns or exchanges. They interface directly with POS software and offer a variety to services and perks.
When buying a POS printer
There are definite deal breakers when it comes to deciding which receipt printer you will. Do you need to print in color, in a hot atmosphere or do you just want something super fast and durable? Whatever you decide your ultimate needs are, you have to do a little research and make sure some points are covered, just ask the right questions.
- What kind of software do you need? If you already have a POS system and need to replace or ad a receipt printer, you must be sure that the printer is compatible with your current software. Many POS printers are utilizing OPOS drivers now and your POS software has to be compatible in order for the products to interface. Trust, the last problem you want is to have the incorrect drivers and/or making a useless purchase. It saves to conduct a little research. Call the manufacturer if you have specific questions.
- How will the printer connect? If you don't have an all-in one POS system i.e., computer, monitor, receipt printer, you'll need to connect the printer to the computer by way of a USB, serial, parallel or Ethernet cable(s). Make sure everything is in its respective place; you don't want to short circuit!
- Do you need a color printer? It may sound like a silly question however, if you want to print a logo or colorful coupons a standard POS printer may not have that functionality. Unlike the printer you use for everyday purposes a color cartridge won't cut it. Be sure and check the printer's specs to find out.
- Do you consistently convert a large volume? If you sell many products and/or services regularly you'll be in the market for a high speed POS printer. You don't want your hardware slowing down checkout times because customers hate waiting. If word gets out that it takes a longer than anticipated time to checkout at your business, your sales could be in trouble. Get a printer that keeps up with you!
The most damaging mistake you can make is not researching a receipt printer before you buy. You have to know it's software compatibility, connectivity and durability in order to make a smart purchase. Acquiring a POS printer that doesn't fit your business is detrimental. So, make some calls and get a deep understanding of the machine, before you make the purchase.
