The Samsung CLX-3175FN's main feature is its tiny footprint. Despite the fact that it features a 10/100 Ethernet port, its small 150 sheet paper tray means that the CLX-3175FN is suitable as a personal printer.
A 2-line LCD screen enables you to navigate menus as well as change settings. It contains a small amount of options, and so is easy to use. If you wish full control, you will have to use the web interface, which is similarly simple to use. We were delighted to find features such as IP filtering, that allows you to restrict use of the printer to selected addresses on your local network, and also a fax phone book.
This is the only colour laser printer within this price bracket with a 1,200x1,200dpi scanner. However, scan speeds were slow. We had to wait around 21 secs for a preview scan, and a 300dpi A4 page needed a minute and 22 seconds. The scan results looked detailed though a bit dark. The scanner interface can communicate with the MFP with a network connection. The main window presents certain important presets then a button expands featuring a selection of scan options.
The print quality appeared to be excellent, having full, intense colours, clean shading and fine detail. The business graphs and illustrations looked vibrant and solidly coloured, and photo-quality images had proper shading and minimal grain. Print speeds was somewhat slow, at 14.6ppm for the mono text document then 3.8ppm for colour, although our initial mono page came about in a quick twelve secs, which can be beneficial if you print just a couple of pages at a time.
The CLX-3175N's biggest draw back is its high print costs. The toner cartridges for the CLX-3175 has a small capacity with the black cartridge (CLT-K4092S) only rated at 1500 pages and the 3 colour cartridges (cyan, magenta & yellow) at 1000 pages, thus the cost of replacing them soon mounts up with too much use. Since these types of cartridges are a new addition to the range of Samsung toner cartridges you can't find any compatible cartridges as of the moment.. But in due time we would expect this situation to change and lead to a more affordable printing costs. However, if you only put it to light use, it's great value, with a TCO of just £366, although heavy users could possibly spend thousands. Nonetheless, if you wish to print superb colour and need to have a personal printer that won't take up too much space, this is a perfect Budget Buy which in due time can be less expensive to run.
