A good drum scanner comes with an optical resolution of 8,000-14,000 dpi whereas a good flatbed scanner can easily scan up to 5400 dpi while a normal flatbed scanner can scan up to 1,600-3,200 dpi. If the file size is an issue with you and you can compromise on the overall quality, you can look for a normal scanner. On the other hand, if the file size is not an issue and the overall quality matters a lot to you, then you can go for a interpolated resolution scanner which has an exceptionally high resolution of 19,200 dpi but means a large file size.
A scanner can be easily attached to a computer with the help of a parallel port, Small Computer System Interface (SCSI), Universal Serial Bus (USB) or FireWire interface.
