How Does a Barcode Scanner Work?
There is close competition in the sales of CCD barcode scanner, laser scanners and other similar applications. The CCD barcode scanners are beneficial as compared to laser scanners in functioning. CCD scanners do not contain any movable parts which reduce the chances of failure. Laser scanners consist of oscillating mirrors which increase the risk of breakage. LEDs are used in CCD scanners which have about ten time greater life then laser light diodes which are used in laser scanners.
Safety precautions must be taken as showed in the warning label about direct viewings while working with lasers. CCD scanners are comparatively safe because they do not have lasers and safe viewing distance warning is not needed. Scan rate for CCD and laser scanner is almost comparable; which is about 45 scans per second and above. CCD scanners are comparatively less expensive and lighter in weight for the laser scanners.
Laser scanners are advantageous over CCD scanners on some factors. Powerful light emission makes them suitable for other than barcode verification. Their greater depth of field makes them suitable to be used by untrained worker. Some of the laser scanners can function properly from a distance of few feet but CCD scanner has a range of few inches to operate. Longer barcodes can be easily read by laser scanners but CCD scanners have the limitation to read barcode length up to three or four inches.
User interfaces are the point of confusion for the buyer and user. The most common interface for CCD scanners is keyboard wedge. Here scanner copies the keyboard after reading the code.
There is an array of hundreds of tiny light sensors fixed in a line at the head of the sensor in CCD scanner. The scanner that we all see at supermarket is CCD scanner. It is very sensitive and compact because of the small sensors. The voltage flow results in a pattern according to the barcode and is created in the reader by measuring flow of voltage in the sensors of the row. As compared with the laser; CCD scanner captures ambient light which should be kept in mind.
Wireless barcode scanners operate on the same frequency as wireless Internet. This type of scanner operates on the 802.11 radio frequency and provides cordless services with freedom for movement at greater extent. The limitation of such type is the battery life as it needs to be charged at regular interval or one has to wait at some time to reuse it. It is plugged with the computer through USB port. The barcode scanner is attached with the keyboard and sends responses about the keys to be pressed which are received from the wireless scanner.
